Painting old or slightly shabby looking furniture is the perfect way to breathe new life into something that may otherwise get thrown out. Plus, you can create truly unique pieces of furniture that will look like they cost a lot more than they really did!Painting your own furniture is kind on your wallet and on your home, so here is how to do it:
You’ll need all of the items on the list below.
- Medium to light sandpaper.
- Cloth
- Paint brushes
- Latex enamel paint
- Primer
- Mineral spirits (for cleaning the piece of furniture)
- You may need wood filler, it depends on whether the item is damaged or not.
1- As with all tasks that involve painting, make sure you cover the area you are working in with something so that the paint doesn’t splatter or drip onto the other items or floor in the room!2- When painting furniture you must make sure the surface is spotless before you begin otherwise the paint maybe uneven or could peel off easily. Wipe the entire item with a clean cloth and the mineral spirits until it is free of dust and impurities.
3- Next sand the furniture to remove any paint or gloss. This is so that when you come to painting it the paint has something to grip onto.
4- Wipe away all the residue left behind after sanding with a clean cloth.
5- Next step is to apply a coat of primer and leave it dry completely.
6- Sand the primer coat lightly and wipe down.
7- Finally apply at least two coats of your chosen paint color onto the furniture but again wait until the first coat is dry before you start the second.
